Professional Development

Planning for professional development for WCSU is through collaboration between administrators and teachers. The WCSU Professional Development Council, with representatives from every school, is the group that oversees this process. The PDC identifies goals for WCSU-wide Professional Development, plans for Professional Development days, and monitors the effectiveness of the opportunities provided. The PDC endorses the concept of Professional Learning Communities as the vehicle for improving professional development. The PDC has adopted and works from the WCSU Leadership Model for Educational Improvement (pdf) .
Opportunities
One important professional development initiative this year across the WCSU elementary schools is working with a classroom consultant, Lisa Yaffee, in implementing the new Investigations math program. Lisa will spend time each month in each elementary school working with the K-2 teachers who are implementing the new program.

Teacher Mentoring

WCSU provides a teacher mentoring program for all new teachers in the Supervisory Union. Teachers new to teaching are assigned a mentor for two years. Experienced teachers new to WCSU are assigned a mentor for their first year. Mentors are successful, experienced teachers who receive training in the mentoring approach used across all WCSU schools. Teachers interested in serving as mentors for new teachers should see their building principal.

More information on the WCSU teacher mentoring program will be added soon.
